Money

1. MATERIALS

The Suzani’s alone cost between €40-€300 depending on fabric quality. Add €45 for trimmings & labels and we have a average of material costs of around €160

2. LABOR OF LOVE

The Afghan artisans get €50 for sewing/completing one of our Suzani coats. Add this up and you get a total before customs of €

3. TRANSPORTATION

The costs for the shipping of one coat from Afghanistan to Germany is €20.

4. CUSTOMS

For customs we have to add 30% of the subtotal ~ €20, resulting in a price of €293

5. PACKAGING WITH VALUE

Each coat is wrapped in a handmade, up-cycled fabric bag that is hand-embroidered by the Saheli Women (€3 per bag). This is then put in a parcel made from 100% recycled paper (€4,50). We end up with a price of €300,50 before covering any ZAZI working costs.

6. ZAZI WORKING COSTS

Naturally, keeping a company as ZAZI running means that we have nonstop overhead costs. We have to pay for our projects in Amsterdam, India, Afghanistan and worldwide. This overhead results in a markup of ~2.6 x on each coat to cover our expenses - leaving us with a total of €796.40 .

7. MARK IT UP

We try to sell as much as possible directly to consumers but ZAZI is also sold through selected retail partners worldwide who have to cover their expenses and expect a price guarantee from our side. This means another mark-up of ~2x which leaves us with a price before VAT of €1216,40,

8. RETAIL PRICE VAT INCLUDED

Because our company is based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands we have to add 21% VAT and EU shipping costs (€15) as the last step. So we get a total price of €1490 as our final retail price.
